WV Mountain State Academy
Roane County Schools is proud to offer a virtual learning option for eligible students through WV Mountain State Academy, in partnership with the Southern Educational Services Cooperative (SESC).
WV Mountain State Academy provides students with the opportunity to complete their education in an online environment while remaining students of Roane County Schools. Virtual learning can be a good option for students who are self-motivated, able to work independently, and whose educational needs are well suited to an online learning environment.
About the Program
Students participating in the Roane County Virtual School:
Remain enrolled as Roane County Schools students.
Complete coursework online from home or another appropriate location.
Receive instruction and support through the virtual learning program.
Follow Roane County Schools and West Virginia requirements for academic progress, attendance, and course completion.
Participate in all required West Virginia state assessments.
Work with a local Roane County Schools virtual school facilitator who helps monitor progress and provides support to students and families.
Virtual learning provides flexibility, but it also requires commitment. Students are expected to log in regularly, keep up with coursework, communicate with their teachers, and maintain satisfactory academic progress.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Virtual School?
Successful virtual students are generally able to:
Work independently and manage their time effectively.
Follow a regular school-day routine.
Complete assignments by established deadlines.
Communicate with teachers and ask for help when needed.
Maintain regular attendance and academic progress.
Have support from a parent or guardian who is willing to help monitor progress.
Virtual school is not simply a reduced workload or an alternative to regular school attendance. Students are expected to participate consistently and successfully complete the same type of standards-based coursework required of other West Virginia public school students.
Student and Family Responsibilities
Students and families play an important role in making virtual learning successful. Families should provide an appropriate place for the student to work, reliable internet access, and ongoing supervision and encouragement.
Parents and guardians should regularly monitor their student's progress and communicate with the virtual school facilitator when concerns arise.
Students are responsible for completing their coursework, maintaining communication with their teachers, and following all Roane County Schools policies and virtual program requirements.
State Testing
Students enrolled in the Roane County Virtual School remain public school students and are required to participate in applicable West Virginia state assessments.
Families will receive information from Roane County Schools regarding testing dates, locations, and other requirements. Virtual students may be required to report to a designated Roane County Schools location for state testing and other required activities.
Technology
Roane County Schools can provide a school-issued device for students participating in the county virtual program. Students and families are responsible for following all district technology and acceptable-use requirements and for taking appropriate care of school-issued equipment.
Reliable internet access is necessary for successful participation in the virtual program.
Enrollment and Continued Participation
Participation in the Roane County Virtual School is subject to Roane County Schools' eligibility and enrollment requirements.
Because successful virtual learning requires consistent participation and academic progress, students' performance may be reviewed throughout the school year. Students who do not maintain appropriate attendance, participation, or academic progress may be required to meet with the virtual school facilitator and/or school administration to determine whether continued virtual enrollment is appropriate.
