Roane County Schools is pleased to announce, "Moving In May" a district-wide wellness initiative, inspired by Governor Morrissey's “Mountaineer Mile Challenge.” This month, our PK–12 students and teachers have been encouraged to take part in a one-mile-per-day walking challenge designed to promote physical activity, build community, and support student achievement. Our schools will integrate educational elements into their walking routines. These might include partner walking where students may practice math facts, spelling words, and other core skills while meeting the Speaking and Listening standards outlined in the WVCCR Standards.
This initiative comes at the perfect time, as our students will take the required statewide assessments in the coming weeks. Research has shown that physical activity can play a vital role in helping students manage stress and maintain focus and that regular physical activity improves cognitive performance, attention, and classroom behavior. This is important as our schools often experience an increase in behavioral incidents toward the end of the academic year. By incorporating structured movement into the school day, we aim to proactively reduce these occurrences while supporting both student wellness and instructional time.
Parents are invited to participate at home by encouraging movement and physical activity after school hours. Let's get moving, Roane County!
