At today’s meeting of the West Virginia Board of Education, the state formally approved Roane County Schools’ closure and consolidation plan. With this decision, Walton Elementary/Middle School and Geary Elementary/Middle School will close at the end of the current school year. Students from both schools will transition to Spencer Elementary, Spencer Middle, and Roane County High School beginning next fall.
With the vote now complete, the district will begin the next phase of the process, including staffing assignments, transition planning, moving preparations, and final facility decisions. In the weeks ahead, Roane County Schools will share detailed information on transportation, student supports, and opportunities for families to meet with school leaders.
District leadership acknowledges the significance of this moment for students, staff, families, and the community, and remains committed to a transparent and supportive transition. Consolidation is expected to strengthen academic offerings, better utilize resources, and improve school facilities for years to come.
